Giving Opportunities

Gifts to the Human Rights Center may be used to support the following programs.

  • Human Rights Fellowship Program:  The Human Rights Fellowship Program awards fellowships to graduate students who work with nongovernmental organizations around the world. Fellows participate in an orientation session before they undertake their fellowship and present their research at a one-day conference when they return. Funds support Fellows’ stipends and incidental costs of the program.
  • Research Missions:  HRC conducts missions to research war crimes and violations of human rights worldwide. In recent years, research teams have traveled to Iraq, Burma, Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. These missions often take place on short notice and require funding for airfare and other travel expenses. HRC has presented its research findings to the U.S. Congress, the International Criminal Court, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
  • Visiting Scholars and Practitioners:  HRC hosts three to five visiting scholars, activists, journalists, and human rights leaders each year who benefit from the resources at UC Berkeley and connections to the human rights community. HRC provides office space, administrative assistance, and a modest stipend.
  • Conferences, Workshops, and Policy Seminars:  HRC regularly sponsors a wide range of events that draw on the expertise of the Berkeley faculty, visiting professors and research fellows, and international leaders in the fields of human rights, international humanitarian law, and international security. Funds cover event expenses, including honoraria and travel, room rental, and follow-up publications or webcasts.
  • Opportunity Fund:  Occasionally, our researchers must respond quickly to a human rights emergency, such as the investigation following the tsunami in Southeast Asia in December 2004 or after Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Discretionary funds allow us to launch studies quickly to assess what studies would be useful to represent the voices of vulnerable populations.

The Human Rights Center seeks gifts to be put to use immediately, as well as endowment gifts to secure these program in perpetuity. All gifts are appreciated and will be recognized appropriately.
